Environmental monitoring is essential for project success, from demonstrating performance and meeting consent requirements to acquiring data and learning what works on the ground. The catch, as everyone knows, is cost. Traditional monitoring depends on people being on site, sometimes at the wrong time or in the wrong weather. That makes comprehensive, continuous monitoring hard to sustain.
Meet EnviroEyes™
Zealandia Consulting has been investing in R&D to change that. EnviroEyes™ is a robust, weatherproof, solar-powered camera unit with secure online image storage and an AI-ready pipeline. Images can be captured and uploaded at custom intervals to suit project requirements, producing a continuous visual record without constant site visits.
Designed for the field
EnviroEyes™ units are built for long-term, unattended deployment and have proven robust across varied environmental conditions. The image stream powers real-time visual dashboards and is actively training machine learning models for smart alerts.
Where it works: construction sites; sediment & erosion controls; streams and wetlands; coastal structures; landfills; farms; unsealed roads; stormwater networks; nature-based solutions; community monitoring; research sites. We can tailor the solution to your specific challenges.
How it works
EnviroEyes™ by Zealandia Consulting follows a simple five-step loop:
1. Capture: Solar-powered unit records high-resolution images at set intervals.
2. Transmit: Images sync to secure cloud storage.
3. Analyse: Visual data feeds dashboards and trains computer-vision models.
4. Alert (coming online): Smart prompts flag likely maintenance or risk events.
5. Act: Teams prioritise the right jobs at the right time.

Case studies
Morningside Whangarei pilot: critical culvert monitoring
Zealandia Consulting is supporting Whangarei District Council (WDC) using EnviroEyes™ to monitor a critical culvert in Morningside to spot blockages before and during forecast rain, reducing flood risk. Phase one concluded by installing a purpose-positioned camera with secure image hosting and on-demand access for WDC, plus the ability for staff to push manual alerts. Phase 2 foresees operationalising our AI imagery analysis for the Morningside context to automatically detect blockages or unusual sediment levels and notify the right teams, with options to extend the model (e.g. measurements or sediment discharge cues).
Auckland Council: O Mahurangi Sediment Pond Monitoring
Building on previous trials to alert the Compliance and Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience teams, Zealandia Consulting is now supporting Auckland Council Natural Environment Strategy (NES) team and developing a predictive tool to support sediment control efforts. Imagery is being used to train machine-learning models to detect significant post-storm changes that trigger sampling and assess pond performance. The platform also enables notifications to compliance officers and onsite contractors so they can prioritise attention and actions where needed.
The O Mahurangi trial has nine EnviroEyes™ cameras, three at each of three sediment ponds, monitoring water clarity/turbidity, pond water levels, and maintenance cues in real time.
